tandem

Tandem means one behind the other, both working. The picture everyone knows is the two-seat bicycle: two riders, one seat in front of the other, and both sets of legs turning the same chain. That is the part people forget — a tandem is not just a line. The person at the back is not a passenger. So when two teams work in tandem, it means they are lined up and pulling together, not standing side by side taking turns. Horses can be harnessed in tandem, one in front of the other, for the same reason. And you will hear the word on its own for the bike itself: they rented a tandem for the afternoon.
