ravine

A ravine is a narrow valley with steep sides, cut by water. The word is worth learning with the water still in it: it comes from an old French word for a rushing torrent, so a ravine is named after the thing that made it, not the shape it left behind. And once you know that, you can read one. The narrowness tells you the water was fast and stayed in a single line. The steep sides tell you it cut downwards quicker than the walls could crumble in. A wide flat valley was made slowly, by a river with time to spare. A ravine was made in a hurry.
