what it means
Acerbic is a taste word that moved into speech. It comes from the Latin for sour, and that is still the flavour of it: an acerbic remark is not shouted, it is dry, and it makes you wince the way a lemon does. That is what separates it from plain rudeness. Rudeness is loud and clumsy; an acerbic wit is quick, controlled, and often very funny to everybody except the person it landed on. Keep it apart from its neighbour caustic, which comes from the word for burning. Acerbic stings and passes. Caustic is meant to take the skin off.
