godsend

A godsend is not simply a good thing. It is the right thing, arriving at the moment it was needed, from somewhere you had nothing to do with. The man in the drawing is not thirsty in a kitchen. He is finished, sitting in sand, and a hand reaches out of a cloud with a cold green drink. Take the desert away and it is only a nice glass of lemonade. So the word is doing two jobs at once: how badly the thing was needed, and how little you arranged it. It was literally God's send, and a trace of that survives — you find yourself thanking something, even when you are not sure what.

Un godsend no es solo algo bueno: es lo que hacía falta, cuando hacía falta, venido de donde tú no pusiste nada. El hombre del dibujo no tiene sed en una cocina: está acabado, sentado en la arena, y una mano sale de una nube con un vaso frío. Quita el desierto y solo queda una limonada. La palabra mide dos cosas: la necesidad, y quién lo dispuso.

Um godsend não é apenas algo bom: é o que faltava, na hora em que faltava, vindo de onde você não pôs nada. O homem do desenho não está com sede na cozinha: está acabado, sentado na areia, e uma mão sai de uma nuvem com um copo gelado. Tire o deserto e sobra só uma limonada boa. A palavra mede duas coisas: a necessidade, e quem arranjou aquilo.

Un godsend, ce n'est pas simplement une bonne chose : c'est la chose qu'il fallait, à l'instant où il la fallait, venue d'où vous n'êtes pour rien. L'homme du dessin n'a pas soif dans une cuisine : il est fini, assis dans le sable, et une main sort d'un nuage avec un verre glacé. Ôtez le désert : il ne reste qu'une bonne limonade.

Godsend bukan sekadar hal baik: ia hal yang tepat, datang pada saat sangat dibutuhkan, dari tempat yang tak ada campur tangan Anda. godsend は「ただ良いもの」ではありません。必要なものが、必要なその瞬間に、自分がまったく関与していない場所から届くことです。絵の男は台所で喉が渇いているのではない。砂の上で力尽きて座っている。そこへ雲から手が伸び、冷たい飲み物を差し出す。砂漠を取り除けば、ただのおいしいレモネードです。この語は必要の切実さと、自分の関与のなさを同時に測っています。
