factoid

what it means

A factoid is a scrap of information that looks like a fact, sounds like a fact, but is rarely backed by solid truth. In the clip, a disheveled figure shrugs sheepishly with reddened cheeks and wild hair, caught spreading a tale he cannot prove. Author Norman Mailer coined the word in 1973 by attaching -oid—meaning resembling, as in humanoid—to describe media assertions repeated until accepted as real. While casual speech often mistakes a factoid for a fun piece of trivia, its truer bite is deceptive belief: that carrots grant night vision, or chewing gum lingers for seven years. It is truth's counterfeit cousin.
