lope

A lope is running that is not in a hurry. The legs go a long way with each step and then wait, so the runner covers a lot of ground without looking like they are trying. Horses lope. Wolves lope. A tall person crossing a field, taking one step where you would take two, is loping. The word carries ease more than speed — a sprint is short and tight and costs everything, a lope is long and loose and could go on all afternoon. If you want to draw it, draw the footprints: far apart, and all the same distance from each other.
