askew

Askew is straight-but-not-quite. A picture hung askew is still on the wall, still doing its job, and still wrong in a way your eye finds within half a second — and that is the useful thing about the word. It does not describe a mess. It describes one small departure from a line you were expecting, which is far more noticeable than chaos. So a hat sits askew, a tie sits askew, a rug lies askew. And it moves into other things: a plan can go askew, meaning it has not collapsed, it has only come off true, and somebody is going to have to straighten it.

Ce n'est pas le désordre : c'est un petit écart par rapport à une ligne attendue. Un plan peut aller askew : il n'est pas tombé, il a gauchi.
