what it means
Pruning is cutting parts off a plant so that the rest can do better. It looks wrong the first time you see it: someone walks up to a healthy tree with a blade and comes away leaving a pile of branches on the ground. But a plant only has so much to give, and every branch it feeds takes from the others. Cut the weak and crowded ones, and the fruit on what is left grows bigger. That is the whole idea, and it is why the word travels so far from gardens. A company prunes its product list. A writer prunes a long chapter. Pruning is not damage — it is choosing what gets fed.
