arc

An arc is a piece of a circle — a curve with no corners, going the way a circle goes. Draw a full circle, rub out most of it, and what is left is an arc: the rainbow, the path of a thrown ball, the sweep a door makes across the floor. It is worth holding next to arch, which it sounds like and is related to. An arch is a thing you can walk under, built of stone or brick. An arc is a shape and nothing more — a line on a page, a movement through the air. And there is one more use worth having: a story arc, the curve a character travels from the first page to the last.

Un arc es un trozo de círculo: una curva sin esquinas. Dibuja el círculo entero, borra casi todo, y lo que queda es un arc — el arcoíris, el vuelo de una pelota. No lo confundas con arch: bajo un arch se puede pasar; un arc es sólo una forma.
