What Is A Resource?

Define 'resource' precisely and classify them according to four specific bases.

Why? Because for something in our environment to be a true "resource," it must pass three tests: it must be technologically accessible, economically feasible, and culturally acceptable.

Core definition of a resource.

What Makes Something a Resource?

Everything available in our environment that can be used to satisfy our needs is a material. But for that material to be termed a resource, it must meet three specific conditions:

It is technologically accessible (we have the tools to extract it).
It is economically feasible (the cost to extract it makes financial sense).
It is culturally acceptable (society supports its use).

The Four Bases of Classification

Origin

Biotic: Living things such as flora, fauna, and human beings.

Abiotic: Non-living things such as rocks and metals.

Exhaustibility

Renewable: Can be reproduced naturally, physically, or chemically, such as solar energy and forests.

Non-renewable: Take millions of years to form, such as fossil fuels.

Ownership

Individual: Privately owned resources, such as farm land.

Community: Shared by local people, such as public parks.

National / International: Resources within state territories or beyond national limits, such as open oceans.

Status of Development

Potential: Resources that exist but are not yet fully used.

Developed Stock: Resources that have been surveyed and are ready for use.

Reserves: A part of stock kept for future use.
