Defining terms and how to handle subtraction.
When an expression has multiple operations and no brackets to tell us what to do first, we use the notion of terms to determine the order.
Visual of the token model converting subtraction.

Subtracting 14 is the exact same action as adding negative 14.
Note that multiplication blocks are single terms.
Worked examples from page 28 showing term identification.
Problem. Identify the separate terms in the following three mathematical expressions:
(a)
(b)
(c)
Faded practice for term identification.
Let's identify the terms in the complex expression .
Step 1: Convert the subtraction to addition. Subtracting a number is the same as adding its . The expression can be rewritten as .
Step 2: List the terms separated by the plus signs. Because they form a single unit, we do not split up a block.
Therefore, the three terms are , , and .
Identify the number of terms in an expression.
How many terms are in the expression: ?
Using terms in applied word problems.
Imagine you and your friends go to a hotel and order 4 dosas. Each dosa costs ₹23, and you decide to leave a flat ₹5 tip to thank the waiter.
