Rounding Up vs Rounding Down

Rules for contextual rounding.

Rounding Up

  • The approximated number is larger than the actual number.
  • Example: A school has 732 people. The principal orders 750 sweets instead of 700.
  • When it makes sense: Ensuring you have enough supplies, ordering food, or budgeting maximum expenses.

Rounding Down

  • The approximated number is smaller than the actual number.
  • Example: An item costs ₹470, and the shopkeeper says it is "around ₹450."
  • When it makes sense: Providing a conservative estimate, communicating base costs, or simplifying a rough figure.
