The Snail Shell Mystery

A short hook story about finding an empty shell.

💡 The Snail Shell Mystery

Avadhi and Aayush were on a morning walk when they found a quiet, still snail shell. They assumed it was just an empty object, but their mother warned them a living snail could be resting inside!

This sparked a huge debate: if the shell isn't moving, breathing, or eating right in front of us, how do we know it's alive? What exactly separates a living creature from a non-living thing like a pebble?

You see a remote-controlled car zooming across the room. Why is it classified as non-living even though it is moving?

Hint

Concept: characteristics-of-life. Think about what the car CANNOT do as years pass, compared to a puppy or a plant.

Feynman on Life

Feynman explains why a car isn't alive even though it moves and consumes fuel.

Learners can ask follow-up questions and keep the thread going.

Here's what nobody tells you about being 'alive': Movement and energy aren't the magic ingredients. Your instinct is to look at a car—it moves, it 'eats' gas, and it 'excretes' exhaust—and think it acts a lot like a living thing. But here is the real secret: a car can never heal a scratched door, build a smaller baby car, or grow into a bus. Living things are self-building, self-repairing chemical factories! If I scratch your arm, it heals. If I scratch my car, it just rusts. What do you think is happening inside a plant or animal that lets it fix and build itself?
