One Paragraph, Five Clusters

A paragraph that needs a substitute from every part of this chapter — and leaves two general words alone.

Fill each gap with ONE word unless the hint says otherwise. Read what comes after each gap before you choose — several gaps turn on whether the next word can be counted.

, housing has become the largest single expense for most households in my city. Rents rose every year for a decade, and shows no sign of stopping. of new flats were built during that period, but almost all of them were priced far above what local could pay. The main behind the shortage is not construction cost but land: , a single site in the centre now sells for more than an entire street did twenty years ago. , some cities have frozen rents entirely, which has had a effect on supply — fewer landlords are willing to let at all. Neither approach is on its own, and the evidence suggests that only building and regulation together will work.

Chapter Production Task

Four sentences with two words banned — the constraint is the whole exercise.

Write four sentences about a change in your city, using at least six words from this chapter.

Topic: something that has changed in your city or town — housing, transport, jobs, the high street.

Two words are banned: "people" and "very". Neither may appear anywhere in your four sentences.

Use at least six Chapter 3 words, from at least three of the five clusters:

linking · instead of very and a lot · instead of good and bad · instead of people and thing · referring back

Join at least two of your sentences with a linker, and refer back to something at least once instead of repeating its noun.

One warning: a substitute has to be more accurate, not just longer. If you write individuals only to avoid people, you have not gained anything.

Your four sentences*

Four sentences. No "people", no "very". Six or more chapter words.

Where did you refer back instead of repeating a noun?*

Quote your reference word and say exactly what it points to.

Which Word Do You Still Repeat

Name the word you fall back on, and get its substitutes back first.

Learners can ask follow-up questions and keep the thread going.

This chapter replaced five overworked words:

and/so · very · good and bad · people and thing · repeating the noun

Which one do you still fall back on when you are running out of time?

Name it, and give me one sentence where you would have used it. I will show you which substitute is more accurate — not just longer, because a swap made only to avoid repetition does not raise your band.
