Six essays. Two look like faults and are not.
A connective opens four sentences in every five, across the whole essay. Which profile?
The over-linker, the under-linker, and the one-device writer.
Adds a connective wherever two sentences meet.
Repair: run the deletion test on every one. Most will survive removal with nothing lost.
The descriptor calls this over-use, and it is named at Band 7.
Twelve passages. Four need nothing.
Sort each item into the correct category
Four passages. Two delete, one adds, one replaces.
A — over-linked. Enforcement was tightened in January. Consequently, violations fell within two months. Furthermore, the fall was sharpest where cameras were densest. Moreover, compliance has held since.
Which one connective would you keep? Why that one? Because
B — under-linked. The council closed three libraries. The eastern boroughs lost their only study space. Borrowing across the city fell by a fifth.
Where does the one connective go? Before sentence Which word?
C — one-device. Fares rose sharply. However, ticket revenue increased. However, passenger numbers held steady.

D — over-linked. Rents outran wages for a decade. As a result, households began leaving. Therefore, the schools lost pupils. Consequently, two closed.
How many of the three connectives survive the deletion test?
Your own tendency, then a paragraph correcting for it.
Three profiles: over-linker, under-linker, one-device writer.
Box 1: which are you? And if you are a one-device writer, name the device. Box 2: write a body paragraph on whether cities should pedestrianise their centres, deliberately correcting for your tendency.
If you think you are balanced, say so — and the paragraph will test it.
One or two sentences.
Four or five sentences.
How many, and how many were real contrasts?
