As a teaching assistant during my PhD at the University of Cape Town, I took up the challenge of encouraging student participation in large classes. To achieve this, I implemented interactive learning techniques such as question and answer sessions, randomly selecting students to explain concepts, and creating fun yet informative quizzes using a platform called Quizlet.
Additionally, I frequently used Google Classroom to organize activities and assignments, and for easier communication with students. I also set up periodic feedback sessions, allowing students to voice concerns and offer suggestions on teaching methods.
Through this initiative, students reported higher levels of understanding, participation, and overall satisfaction in anonymous polls conducted during the course. Lessons learned from this experience have made me consistently revisit my teaching methods, using student feedback as a tool to continually enhance their engagement.
