The Synthetic Cell

In 2010, scientist J. Craig Venter and his team made a massive breakthrough in synthetic biology. They used a computer to read the DNA of a simple bacterium, and then chemically synthesized an exact, artificial copy of that DNA in a laboratory.

But they didn't stop there. They inserted this newly created synthetic DNA into a different, existing cell.
