Six sentences. Mark the ones that look wrong to you before you scroll — most people mark none, and that is the finding.
Do this before you scroll. Note down the numbers of any that seem off to you.
- The enormity of the task facing the new director cannot be overstated.
- She gave a fulsome apology to the families.
- Many students are disinterested in politics.
- The share price literally collapsed overnight.
- Which begs the question of whether the policy was ever affordable.
- The floods decimated the entire village.
Most candidates mark none of them. Several will feel faintly uneasy about one, usually number four.
All six contain a usage that careful writing treats differently. That is not a comment on your English — it is a comment on which words you have learned well enough to get wrong.
An honest ranking of the six, because pretending they are all equally wrong would fail anybody who reads widely.
disinterested is the one item here you should learn rather than avoid, because the careful sense is genuinely useful and has no one-word replacement:
The dispute was referred to a disinterested third party.
That means the third party has no stake in the outcome. There is no other single word for it — impartial and neutral are close but not identical, and uninterested means something else entirely. Learn the pair and you gain a word:
| disinterested | has no stake in the outcome |
| uninterested | is bored, does not care |
literally is settled in a different way. Its careful sense — this is not a figure of speech — is real, but in a Task 2 essay you will almost never need it. The intensifier use is very widespread in speech and is recorded by dictionaries, but it reads as informal on a script.
The exam advice is not to use it correctly. It is to delete it. In argumentative writing it is almost always doing nothing.
Three words, and the gap between the sentence you wrote and the one a careful reader received.
Left: the sentence you wrote. Right: the sentence a careful reader received.
Eight sentences, half of them correct. Two of the correct ones will surprise you.
Four of these eight are correct. Two of the four correct ones use a word this sprint warns about — because the warnings are about specific collocations, not blanket bans, and a course that taught otherwise would be teaching pedantry.
For each, decide whether careful writing would accept the sentence as it stands.
"The tribunal was set up to address the enormity of what had been done to the villagers."
Three chains. Twice the answer is to avoid the word entirely, and that is a strategy rather than a retreat.
Chain 1
You want to write about how large a policy challenge is. Your draft reads: the enormity of the challenge facing the department.
Candidates: keep enormity / the scale of
Step 1 — Which sense will a careful reader take, and does a free replacement exist?
Step 2 — Therefore the expert writes: the challenge facing the department is hard to overstate.
Chain 2
You want to say that a review panel had no stake in the outcome, which is why its finding carries weight.
Candidates: disinterested / uninterested
Step 1 — Is the panel bored, or does it have no stake?
Step 2 — Therefore the expert writes: The finding carries weight because it came from a panel.
Chain 3
Your draft reads: the report gave no costings, which begs the question of how the scheme would be funded.
Candidates: keep begs the question / raises the question
Step 1 — Which sense do you mean, and which sense might your reader take?
Step 2 — Therefore the expert writes: The report gave no costings, which of how the scheme would be funded.
