Two sentences about the same finding. Work out what the second one added before you read on.
The study shows how the two effects interact.
The study illuminates how the two effects interact.
Both are correct. The second is the one most candidates would rather have written.
What did it add? Something specific, and it is not merely emphasis.
The three-way distinction in detail, the second axis nobody teaches, and the two items that describe a surface rather than an effect.
obscure — something is in the way. There is an obstruction between the thing and the viewer.
The technical detail obscures the argument.
The detail is sitting in front of the argument. Remove it and the argument is visible again.
overshadow — something brighter or larger is beside it. Nothing is in the way; the thing is entirely visible and nobody is looking at it.
The funding crisis overshadowed the curriculum reforms.
The reforms were not concealed. They were reported, published, available — and next to a crisis, nobody cared.
blind spot — nobody looked. Nothing is in the way and nothing is brighter. The thing sits in plain view outside the direction anybody is facing.
Rural transport is a blind spot in the national debate.
That is the strongest of the three as a criticism, because it says the failure is in the looking, not in the thing.
The same small plant, three times. Nothing about it changes — only its relationship to the light and to the viewer.
In the way, outshone, or simply not looked at. Three different situations, and one word for all of them is not enough.
Six situations. Twice the plain word is right, because somebody simply concealed something.
Ask two questions of each situation: what is the geometry — is something in the way, is something brighter beside it, or is it simply not looked at — and is anybody doing it?
In two of the six the plain word is correct, because somebody concealed something on purpose and none of the three vision words says that.
A genuine problem in social care gets almost no coverage because a hospital funding crisis in the same year takes all the attention. Nobody concealed anything and the reports were all published. Which word?
Three chains on the three-way distinction. Name the geometry before you name the word.
Chain 1
The situation: a report's central finding sits on page 41, after forty pages of procedural description. Nothing has been removed and nobody hid anything, but a reader has to dig for it.
Candidates: obscured / overshadowed
Step 1 — Is something in the way, or is something brighter beside it?
Step 2 — Therefore the expert writes: The central finding is by forty pages of procedure.
Chain 2
The situation: a set of curriculum reforms was announced, reported and published in full during the same month as a major funding crisis. Nothing concealed them; the crisis simply took every column inch.
Candidates: obscured / overshadowed
Step 1 — Was anything between the reforms and the public?
Step 2 — Therefore the expert writes: The reforms were entirely by the funding crisis.
Chain 3
The situation: nobody has written about rural transport in the national debate for a decade. Nothing prevents it, nothing more dramatic crowds it out, and no document conceals it. It is simply not a thing anybody looks at.
Candidates: overshadowed / a blind spot
Step 1 — Where does the failure lie: in something blocking, something brighter, or in the looking?
Step 2 — Therefore the expert writes: Rural transport remains in the national debate.
