One disagreement, two descriptions. The second has said something about the people in it.
Assisted dying is one of the most contested questions in medical ethics.
Assisted dying has become the central battleground of medical ethics.
The second is more vivid. Most candidates would rather have written it, and a marker would notice it.
What has it asserted about the people involved? Not about the issue — about the people.
What each item frames the parties as, the one that is not military at all, and the essay types where the imagery is right.
The question to ask of any item in this family is not how strong is it but what does it turn the participants into:
| Item | It makes the parties… |
|---|---|
| battleground | armies, and the issue a piece of territory |
| flashpoint | not parties at all — a place where something will catch |
| rally behind | followers, gathering around a leader |
| fend off | one attacker and one defender |
| hold sway | one influential and one not. No fight |
| gain ground | one advancing. Still no fight |
Read the bottom two again. Hold sway and gain ground borrow the map without the battle, and that is precisely why they survive in balanced prose.
Eight items, eight framings. Two of them turn the parties into nothing at all.

Six paragraphs. Three use conflict imagery where the task cannot afford it.
Each item tells you what the essay is doing before it gives you the sentence. The imagery is not right or wrong in itself — it is right or wrong for the task.
Ask one question every time: has this essay already taken a side? If it has not, the two sides are positions rather than armies. Two of the six resolve to the plain word and one to a safe item.
A discuss-both-views essay on assisted dying. This is the opening sentence of the paragraph presenting the first view, before any conclusion has been reached. Which version?
Three chains. Ask what the essay has already committed to before you choose the picture.
Chain 1
