Five things, one per sprint, and the two habits underneath them. Tick only what you could do in an exam.
Thirty items, five clusters. Any item that hesitates is the one to review.
Sort each item into the correct category
Twelve items. In five the correct answer is the ordinary word — because no dimension has been established.
Twelve items across the five clusters. Read each stem for what it establishes, not for what you would guess.
In five of the twelve the correct answer is the plain word, because no dimension has been established and naming one would be a claim you cannot support. That is not the course going easy on you — it is the Band 8 skill, and a candidate who has learned this chapter as a word list will fail exactly these five.
A council charges £3 for a garden-waste collection. The paragraph says nothing about why the figure is low. Which word?
A single passage drawing on all five sprints. Four of the ten gaps take the plain word, and four bank words are not needed.
A national review of care-home inspection published this year makes three findings.
First, the inspectorate's own guidance is followed unevenly. evidence was found that inspectors in two of the five regions had read the 2021 revisions at all.
Second, reform of the system has been : eleven separate changes over nine years, under four chief inspectors, with no overall plan at any point.
Third, a number of inspections — a fifth of the review's sample — lasted under twenty minutes. Those visits were , recording no conversation with any resident and no entry beyond the reception area.
The figures are published and the arithmetic is checkable, so the shortfall is a failure of the system rather than of individual inspectors. Why the guidance went unread the review does not say; since the revisions arrived in the same month as a restructuring, they were lost in it.
A shortage of experienced staff the inspectorate to precisely this kind of failure without making it inevitable. Whether it explains what happened in these two regions is another matter: nothing has been ruled out, so the shortage can only be said to have the problem.
The sector's response has been mixed. Two provider associations filed formal responses to the methodology; others said nothing publicly, and the review records only that a number of directors have about the direction of travel. The government has now promised a review of the framework, without saying yet who it will cover.
A full Task 2 body paragraph with a hard ceiling of four chapter items. The ceiling is the assessment.
Prompt
Some governments are considering making public transport free at the point of use. Discuss the arguments for and against, and give your own opinion.
Write ONE body paragraph, 180–260 words, arguing either side.
The ceiling is four. At most four items from this chapter — from any of the five clusters. Fewer is not a weaker answer. Zero is defensible.
Before you submit, run the chapter's question on each one:
Which kind am I claiming — and has my paragraph shown it?
Then count them. If you are at five, cut the one doing the least work.
A reminder of the four items most often used wrongly: demonstrably is a promise to produce the demonstration; token and perfunctory are accusations; piecemeal has no neutral use; categorically describes a statement, not the world.
You may invent plausible detail about a city, a network or a study. Do not present invented figures as published research.
180–260 words. At most four chapter items.
Item and dimension. Writing them out IS the check.
Name it and give the reason. "None" is acceptable only if it is true.
Name the ones you are leaving behind. Deciding not to use a word you have learned is a result, not a retreat.
