During long division, what happens if the part you are dividing is smaller than your divisor?
The rule is simple: the divisor goes into it zero times. You must write 0 in the quotient at that place value, and then bring down the next digit to continue.
Example 2 from page 42, where the hundreds place gives nothing.
Problem. Divide 6,507 by 6.
Step 1. We start division from the extreme left. Divide 6 thousands by 6.
Write 1 at the thousands place in the quotient. There is nothing left over.

Let us divide 4,926 by 7 to find the quotient and remainder.
First, 49 hundreds divided by 7 is , with nothing left over. We bring down the next digit, which is 2. Since 2 is than our divisor 7, the divisor goes in zero times, so we must write in the quotient at the tens place.
Finally, we bring down the 6 to make 26 ones; 26 divided by 7 is 3 with a remainder of 5. Our quotient is 703. We can check this because 7 times 703 plus 5 equals .
