The names for the parts of a subtraction, and what borrowing means.
When we subtract, each number has a specific name based on its job. The minuend is the number from which we subtract. The subtrahend is the number to be subtracted. The final answer is called the difference.
For example, in the equation , the minuend is , the subtrahend is , and the difference is .

Let's subtract from the minuend, . In the ones column, gives us . Moving to the tens, we cannot subtract from , so we must borrow. However, the hundreds column is and has nothing to give, so we borrow from the thousands column, turning the top into a . This makes the hundreds column , which we immediately borrow from to make our tens column , leaving a in the hundreds column. Now for the tens column, leaves . In the hundreds column, we calculate which leaves . Finally, for the thousands, we borrow from the ten thousands (turning into ), making the thousands column which gives , resulting in a final difference of .

What to do when the column you want to borrow from holds nothing.
Sometimes, the column you need to borrow from holds a zero. Since a zero has nothing to give, you must go one column further to the left to find a digit you can borrow from.

When a zero has nothing to give, the borrow travels from the next available digit, leaving a 9 behind as it passes through the zero.
