How to stack numbers of different lengths before you add them.
When adding numbers that have different amounts of digits, the first step is to arrange them in columns correctly. The golden rule is to line the numbers up starting from the right-hand end.

When adding numbers of different lengths, we must arrange them correctly before we begin. Let us add , , and . We line up all three numbers from the right so that ones are under ones. For the number , the goes in the column, the goes in the tens column, and the goes in the hundreds column. Because has no thousands or ten thousands, those places on the left side are left or filled with a zero. Starting from the right-hand side, we add column by column. We must remember to include any carry overs in our totals. After carefully adding all columns, our final sum is .
