wretched

Wretched means very unhappy and in a terrible state — cold, poor, ill or lonely, and pitiful to look at. It comes from Old English wrecca, an exile, someone driven from home. Victorian novels are full of wretched people in foggy streets. It can also just mean very bad: a wretched cold, this wretched printer. In the animation, a man sits in a torn, patched blanket with a black eye and a fly circling his head.
