whimsical

A whim is a wish that arrives with no reason attached; whimsical is what things look like when a whim was allowed to win. It is not careless and not silly — it is odd on purpose, and pleased with itself. The word lives in the gap between the ordinary world and one decision nobody can explain. In the animation, a stern man in a long coat walks a pink balloon poodle on a lead, in perfect seriousness.
