sidekick

A sidekick is the helper who stays next to the hero: smaller, funnier, and often doing the real work. The word is American slang from about 1900, probably from the side pocket, the safest place to keep something close. Batman has Robin; Sherlock Holmes has Watson. A sidekick is loyal but never the star. In the animation, a tiny man lifts the hero's huge case while the hero poses.
