The number is inside the word: Venice, in the plague years, made an arriving ship wait quaranta giorni — forty days — before anyone came ashore. Quarantine is not being treated; you are held, and time does the work. It fits anything that must sit apart until it is proved safe: a new dog, a suspect file. In the animation, the dock is right there, but the sailor's beard has had time to reach the water.
