plutocracy

A plutocracy is a country run by the rich, because money buys power: votes, laws, newspapers. Greek ploutos means wealth, and -cracy means rule, as in democracy. In a plutocracy elections may still happen, but the few who pay decide the result. It is a critical word, not a neutral one. In the animation, one rich man on a gold coin outweighs a whole crowd on the scales.
