Ludicrous comes from the Latin for play, and that is the whole meaning: something ludicrous belongs to the world of play and has turned up somewhere serious by mistake. A ludicrous excuse is not just a bad one; nobody can treat it as a real attempt. The test: if you can be angry with it, it was only wrong. If the only reply is laughter, it was ludicrous.
