Humdrum means dull, predictable and without surprises. The word pairs hum and drum: the drone of a machine and the slow thump of the same beat. A humdrum routine is laundry, invoices and the same road to work every Tuesday. It isn't painful or a disaster; the problem is that nothing ever sparkles.
