Aloof means keeping your distance from other people — not rude, not shy, just not interested in getting close. It began as a sailing word: to keep a loof was to steer the ship away from the shore. An aloof person is polite but cool, and seems perfectly fine alone. In the animation, a man sips his coffee calmly inside a ring of velvet ropes that nobody else may cross.
