Distinguish research designs and understand the structural frameworks (paradigms) that shape scientific inquiry.
Flashcards for key research design terms.
Introduction to methodology, protocol, paradigm, and research designs.
Before a scientist even begins an experiment, their worldview is shaped by a paradigm. Coming from the Greek paradeigma (pattern or model), a paradigm is the overarching structural framework or belief system governing a field of study.
Think of a paradigm as a pair of tinted glasses. If a researcher wears "economic" glasses, they view deforestation as a loss of timber resources. If they wear "ecological" glasses, they view it as a loss of biodiversity. A paradigm shift (like moving from classical physics to quantum mechanics) changes the entire way a discipline understands the world.
