With three years of experience as a Civil Engineer at a rapidly growing engineering consultancy in Thailand, I've been part of several water-related projects. The most notable was a flood control project for a township frequently affected by heavy monsoons.
My primary responsibility was to conduct a comprehensive hydrological study of the area. I used GIS software to map the river catchment, predict water flow, and identify key flood-prone zones. One of the main challenges was the high variability of the region's rainfall patterns, which meant our flood control system needed to be robust and flexible.
To overcome this, I designed a series of retention ponds and a redesigned the river bank to accommodate fluctuating water levels efficiently. After months of rigorous testing and sophisticated modelling, we were successful in implementing a system which drastically reduced the risk of flooding. The project was heralded within our firm as a standard to strive for, indicating our commitment towards mitigating water-induced disaster risks.
