As a Medical Assistant in St. Paul Hospital Manila, patient education has been a significant part of my role. My primary responsibility is to ensure that patients are fully aware of their medical conditions, medications, and routine care procedures. I believe that a well-educated patient is better placed to manage their health effectively.
One technique that I've found very successful is the "teach-back" method. After explaining a concept or procedure, I ask the patient to explain it back to me. This not only highlights any misunderstanding but also reinforces the information. For example, when teaching a patient to manage their asthma with an inhaler, I would demonstrate the technique and then ask the patient to show me what they learned. This interactive approach ensures that patients can accurately follow the instructions, leading to better overall care.
