As a Research Associate in Cognitive Psychology at MindFirst, one of my responsibilities was ensuring ethical integrity in our studies. A project that comes to mind is a large-scale experiment studying memory function in children. The ethical dimensions of the project were immense due to the involvement of minors.
In response to these issues, I worked closely with the Institutional Review Board, other researchers, and legal experts to develop a comprehensive ethics compliance protocol. We implemented strict consent procedures, ensuring not only the children understood the research but also their parents or guardians. All participants were made fully aware of the implications of the research, and we frequently reiterated their rights, including their freedom to withdraw at any point.
Despite these measures adding to the project's complexity, the integrity of the results was unimpeachable, and we could confidently present our findings to the scientific community. It taught me the vital role of ethical considerations in delivering meaningful and reliable research.
