Can you provide an example of how you conducted soil analysis and how the findings influenced a construction project?

How To Approach: Associate

  1. Highlight your involvement in professional soil testing.
  2. Describe a real-world construction project.
  3. Share the analysis process.
  4. Detail how the findings influenced the construction plan.

Sample Response: Associate

As an Associate Geotechnical Engineer at TerraFirma LLC, I have participated in several soil analysis projects for our construction clients. One project I’d like to highlight was a multi-storey residential development on what appeared to be expansive clay soil.

We started our soil analysis with an extensive site investigation collecting representative soil samples. We conducted several tests, including laboratory compaction, CBR (California Bearing Ratio), liquid limit, and plastic limit test. Our tools comprised a CBR apparatus, proctor compaction equipment, and Atterberg’s limits apparatus among others.

The results indicated high plasticity clay, signalling potential ground movement and unpredictable behavior under load. Due to these findings, I recommended the use of piled foundations as well as clay soil stabilization techniques to the architect and structural engineer. This insight reshaped the construction plans, ensuring the longevity and safety of the building. It's a prime example of how a detailed understanding of soil properties can dramatically influence construction execution and structural stability.
