As a Junior Producer at New Delhi Media, my role frequently involves navigating the complex intersection of creative storytelling and ethical responsibilities. Notably, on a documentary about gender-based violence, I found myself making key decisions to ensure ethical standards were met.
We faced an abundance of considerations, such as ensuring survivors’ safety and dignity, managing sensitive content, and verifying our sources in adherence to journalistic integrity. We spent many hours with our subjects, allowing them to trust us and express their consent fully and understandingly. Moreover, we employed consultation with legal advisors to verify our compliance with applicable laws and conducted regular internal reviews to confirm our commitment to accuracy and fairness.
The documentary was challenging to produce. Still, by holding to ethical standards throughout the project, we created a poignant piece that amplified critical perspectives. This experience reinforced the significance of ethics in media production, and it continues to guide my practice today.
